Zola Jesus Performs at the Guggenheim

Jenni Hensler approached me with this project. She designed a Nautilus light-up shoulder piece involving LEDs from Adafruit, as well as a developed, strong story and love for elegant organic forms. Never one to back away from an ambitious project, I was totally game to help construct it and consult on its fabrication. I introduced her to Langoliers vendors, and got some of my team involved as well.

Together we worked tirelessly, troubleshooting problems as they arose. I’m really proud of the work we did, and how much we both learned. I cut and bend the copper piping.  We went through a lot of versions—at one point we were about to use clear crocodile skin!— before finally settling on the final look of the piece. Along the way, I was able to meet and work alongside Jenni’s incredible assistant and 3d sculptor Arianna Paoletti and the very talented Luis Cascante. Special thanks to my good friend and Langoliers knitter Lydia Austin for helping to tack down the gauzy fabric to the armiture. A lot of people put a lot of hard work into that piece, and I’m so grateful for all the lovely support from everyone!

On to the next!

xoxo,

Pamela
